Rudolf Serkin's recordings of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major and the Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, recorded in 1983 and 1982, respectively, have been reissued without any remastering in Telarc's Classics line, apparently because the label regards the original digital masters to be pure enough without further enhancements. Serkin pursues a bold approach in these works, and Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra are accordingly robust and muscular in their accompaniment. But here's my musicological take I find the 2 and 4 sweet in comparison to the 1, 3, and 5. Against this backdrop, I think this CD brings out the sweetness in its mixing, with a little more emphasis on the strings relative to the percussion than some other issues. But generally I find Telarc has really overcome some of the shortcomings of early DDD recordings. The Piano Concerto No. 5 in E major, Op. 73, by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the Emperor Concerto, was his last completed piano concerto. It was written between 1809 and 1811 in Vienna, and was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf, Beethoven's patron and pupil. The first performance took place on 13 January 1811 at the Palace of Prince Joseph Lobkowitz in Vienna, with Archduke Rudolf as the soloist, followed by a public concert on 28 November 1811 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig under conductor.
