Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard is the tenth album by jazz musician John Coltrane and his first live album, released in February 1962 on Impulse Records, catalogue A-10. It is the first album to feature the members of the classic quartet of himself with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. In contrast to his previous album for Impulse, this one generated much turmoil among both critics and audience alike with its challenging music. I only listened to this album once when I gave it a rating of 4 and after a second time I'm putting it at a 5. It's some of the best live versions Coltrane as done and this is probably his most known session as well. The album starts off with Spiritual and it's a slow 13 minute number that's fairly good. Since then, he has led his band Five Elements at the Vanguard every year, including these two sets recorded in May, 2017. Unlike his two most recent releases, Morphogenesis NPR Critics Poll 2 album of 2017 and Synovial Joints New York Times 1 jazz album of 2015, both of which are highly orchestrated, Colemans recent goal has been to perform as spontaneously as possible, often completely extemporaneously, and yet still retain form and structure
