Panzerfaust is the fifth studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone, released in June 1995 by Moonfog Productions Europe and The End Records North America. The track Quintessence featured lyrics by Varg Vikernes, their second and final album to do so. As with the previous album Transilvanian Hunger, all instruments on Panzerfaust were recorded solely by Fenriz on a 4-track recorder set up in his bedroom dubbed Necrohell studios by the band with Nocturno Culto performing vocals on. Panzerfaust review: True Norwegian Black Metal. It may seem a completely irrelevant story, but if you take one single look at the album cover of Panzerfaust you will see a scene not unlike the one I mentioned before. The snow covered ground, the darkened trees, the full moon, and the shadowed figure of a man. Indeed a photograph to marvel over, this is but a piece of what exactly black metal of this variety is intended to convey True Norwegian Black Metal. Panzerfaust is the first Darkthrone album that uses a lot of simple guitar chords within the songs. Because in albums such as Transilvanian Hunger, and Under a Funeral Moon, the guitar chords are more sophisticated and juicy, which sounds very yummy. And then theres Panzerfaust. Its definitely a Darkthrone album, but you can sense from their three big albums that they were trying to ease their way into something a little different, what with riffs that almost sound like rock permeating songs like Triumphant Gleam and Beholding the Throne of Might, although sludgier and crustier
