Rock Art and the X-Ray Style - Joe Strummer, The Mescaleros. Rock Art and the X-Ray Style is the debut album by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, released in 1999. This album featured the band in its first incarnation: Joe Strummer and Antony Genn on guitar and vocals, Martin Slattery playing keyboards and guitar, Steve Smiley Barnard on drums, Pablo Cook on other percussion instruments, and Scott Shields on bass. Richard Flack also did engineering on the album. X-Ray Style. Joe Strummer And The Mescaleros. Strummer, who helped lead the Clash beyond punk rock to a variety of rhythmic styles, has only expanded his range since, and Rock Art and the X-Ray Style is an album of songs built on often exotic, funky beats, few of which rock very hard. Over those rhythm tracks, Strummer sings highly poetic, apparently freely associative lyrics whose meanings usually seem to be either private to him or just not literal. X-ray Style. Techno D-day. The Road To Rock'n'roll. Diggin' the New. The record marked Strummer's reemergence from a long absence in the music scene, his last record being 1989's Earthquake Weather. 10 tracks, 49:44. Release Date. 18 October 1999. The album got many fans of Joe Strummer and The Clash excited about the new release. But this would sound very far from The Clash's material. Although The Clash experimented often, especially in their later work of London Calling and Sandinista, The Mescaleros furthered the various musical styles or rather expanded on it playing a wide range of styles from rock, folk, techno, funk, reggae, and world music. Something Joe was always interested in was the African culture and African music. Recommended Tracks: X-Ray Style Forbidden City The Road To Rock 'N' Roll Willesden To Cricklewood Tony Adams.
